Why Do People Skydive?

Why Do People Skydive?

Published: July 20, 2016

"So, like, skydiving? Really? Why?"

This tends to be a favorite question when we're asked to tell strangers what we do for a living--at weddings, church picnics, graduations, etc. We love skydiving so much (SO MUCH) that we kinda find the question funny. Laughter is awkward when you're balancing a plastic champagne flute with a tiny, overburdened plate of hors d'oeuvres, so we've decided to answer the question once and for all.

Why Skydive? Because Facebook.

Okay. Let's just get this part out of the way, shall we?

Photos and video of you and your ecstatic grin hurtling through the big blue upstate skies are going to be the envy of every single one of your friends. It's predestined. Your social media channels will EXPLODE. That's just the way it's gonna be.

That said, there are many more reasons to skydive--and those reasons aren't about your friends. They're about you, dear reader.

It's Disproportionately Empowering.

Once you saddle up and jump out the door of what the uninitiated refer to as a "perfectly good airplane," you will never be the same again. (Specifically: you will never again refer to a "perfectly good airplane" with a knowing sideways grin because you know that the best part of any airplane is the part where you get to leave at 10,000 feet.)

But I digress.

Making that first tandem skydive is going to change the way you look at everything. For something that takes just a morning (or afternoon) of your time, you'll be bowled over by how powerful a "medicine" it is. A skydive bestows enormous confidence. It helps shift the challenges of your life into a healthy perspective. It also forces your awareness of your own personal power. After all: if you can jump out of a plane with a happy holler, what can't you do?

Because It's A Way Of Life.

Kinda like surfing, or yoga, or rock climbing, skydiving isn't just about making a skydive. It has a philosophy all its own--a philosophy that revolves around freedom, community support and progressing as an athlete in the sport. (If you weren't aware that it's a serious sport, run a Google image search for "competitive skydiving" and be prepared for some majestic feels.) Skydivers form an inclusive worldwide family.

Some people even come for the skydiving and stay for the people, y'know. It's pretty wild.

It's Fun. Way, Way, Way Fun.

How often does an opportunity come up that packs such an awesomeness wallop that it makes people decide to hold everything else and do it full time? In skydiving, that happens relatively often. Seriously. It does.

In fact, some people walk away from their first tandem skydive with such a huge smile on their face that they decide to work towards becoming a professional skydiver. Even more, people land from that first tandem and walk right back to Manifest to start earning a skydiving license. Lots of those folks end up spending every weekend for the next decade (or five) in the sky.

Sound nuts? It's totally not unheard-of. Maybe that's you! There's only one way to find out why people skydive... you have to try it for yourself!
